🦸♂️ Is there a new cultural logic emerging in business?
We're witnessing something unprecedented: a shift beyond traditional organizational cultures toward what I call "Titanic Culture" - a new value system that transcends even the power-driven dynamics we've known.
While Dr. Simon Sagmeister's Business Culture Map charts seven core cultural systems (always oscillating from individual to collectivistic behavior), I believe we're seeing the emergence of an eighth cultural paradigm.
This isn't just about strong leadership or entrepreneurial drive. It's about the rise of mythic individualism - where leaders position themselves as singular saviors, disruptors, and visionaries who alone can "fix" complex systems.
Think about the narratives surrounding figures like Elon Musk, Donald Trump, or Javier Milei. The pattern is clear: "Only I can solve this."
The name "Titanic Culture" is deliberately ironic - like the ship itself, these leadership approaches often appear "unsinkable" while carrying the seeds of their own destruction. The grander the myth, the more spectacular the potential crash.
Key characteristics are:
- Visionary dominance over collaborative leadership
- Media-fueled personal mythology
- Institutions become stages for individual performance
- Success measured by proximity to the "hero"
Over the next few posts, I'll explore different aspects of this phenomenon - from how it transforms workplace roles to its political manifestations.
What do you think? Are you already seeing this titanic logic in your industry?
